Richard Turere was nine years old when the job of tending his family’s cattle became his. That’s a normal age for a Maasai boy in Kitengela, a settlement on the unfenced edge of Nairobi National Park, one of the most lion-dense parks in the world.

What wasn’t normal was how much of his childhood the lions took with it. At night, prides simply walked out of the park and into the family’s cattle pen, called a boma, and by his own account the losses came fast enough that he grew up hating lions before he was old enough to do anything about it.

Everything obvious failed first

His early attempts followed the traditions everyone around him already used, and none of them held up. Fire didn’t deter the lions. Scarecrows worked for a night or two before the lions apparently figured out a motionless figure posed no threat.

Building a darker, more enclosed shed hid the cattle from view, but lions hunt by scent as much as sight, so it didn’t matter that they couldn’t see in.

The breakthrough came from something Turere noticed almost by accident. Walking the pen at night with a flashlight to check on the herd, he realized the lions kept their distance whenever he was out there.

It wasn’t the light on its own that mattered, since a lit but stationary lamp hadn’t worked as a deterrent before. It was a light that moved, the visible sign that a person was awake and patrolling.

According to his account in a TED Talk he gave in 2013, lions reliably avoided any enclosure where a human seemed to be up and walking around it with a torch. The obvious problem was that no child, however determined, can patrol a fence line all night, every night, for years.

Parts scavenged from around the homestead

So Turere set out to build something that could do the patrolling for him, using whatever he had. He’d already spent years taking apart his family’s electronics for fun, an experiment his mother’s radio reportedly did not survive intact.

For the lion deterrent, he pulled small bulbs from broken flashlights and, according to one account, the indicator light box from a motorcycle, mounted them on poles facing outward around the boma, and wired them to a switch box connected to an old car battery.

That battery stayed charged off a solar panel the family already used to run their television, and a wind-powered backup was added later for cloudy stretches.

The key detail wasn’t the lights themselves but the sequence. Turere programmed them to flash irregularly and in a pattern that shifted over time, so that from beyond the fence, in the dark, the effect resembled someone moving from post to post with a torch rather than a fixed light a predator could quickly learn to disregard.

It worked. Turere has said the family’s cattle losses, which had run to multiple animals a week before the lights went up, effectively stopped.

A solution that spread faster than expected

Word moved through Kitengela quickly once neighbors noticed the Turere boma had gone quiet. Families who had been losing livestock, and in some cases killing lions in retaliation, began asking for the same setup, and within a couple of years dozens of homesteads around the area had adopted it, at a materials cost of only a few dollars per rig.

The system’s reach kept expanding well beyond its original neighborhood. As of the 2023 announcement naming Turere a European Patent Office prize winner, Lion Lights had been adopted across multiple African countries as well as in India and parts of Latin America, with variants also used to deter hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, and even elephants that responded to the same flashing pattern by staying clear of crops.

The stakes behind that spread are larger than any single herd. According to the World Wildlife Fund, Africa’s lion population has declined by roughly 43 percent over the past two decades, with retaliatory killings by herders a significant driver of that decline.

A deterrent cheap enough for a subsistence farming family to build from spare parts addresses both sides of the same conflict: it protects the herd, and it removes the main reason a farmer might otherwise go after the lion that threatens it.

From a homestead in Kitengela to a stage in California

Turere’s invention didn’t stay a local fix for long. Conservationist Paula Kahumbu, then head of the organization WildlifeDirect, learned about the system and helped connect Turere to a scholarship at Brookhouse International School, one of Kenya’s leading schools.

That connection eventually led to an invitation to speak at the TED conference in Long Beach, California in 2013, where a 13-year-old Turere explained his invention to a standing ovation and a global audience that had, until then, never heard of Kitengela.

He kept building. In 2023, the European Patent Office named Turere, by then 22, the winner of its Young Inventors Prize, a category open to inventors 30 and under whose work advances the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, ranking him first among three finalists at that year’s ceremony in Valencia, Spain.

The trick was never really about electronics

Strip away the biography and what’s left is a small, elegant piece of behavioral engineering rather than a technical one. Turere didn’t build a stronger fence, a weapon, or an alarm that would summon help after the fact.

He built a signal, aimed squarely at how a lion reads a landscape: something that says a person is present and alert, which is the one condition every version of the story agrees lions reliably avoid.

Every physical component of the original rig, the bulbs, the battery, the panel, the wire, was already sitting somewhere in or around the homestead.

The only genuinely new part was the observation a nine year old on night watch made before anyone else had thought to look for it: the thing keeping the lions away was never really the torch. It was the person holding it, and it turned out that presence could be faked, convincingly, for the price of spare parts.
