Every house sparrow chirping under a gas station awning or nesting in a traffic light signal, from Alaska down to Panama, can trace its ancestry back to a handful of shipping crates that came off a boat in New York Harbor in the early 1850s. The story of how they got there starts with a genuinely miserable problem: shade trees stripped bare, year after year, by caterpillars.

A city under siege by inchworms

In the mid-1800s, Brooklyn and Manhattan had a seasonal caterpillar problem that sounds almost comic in hindsight but clearly wasn’t at the time. Every June, geometer moth larvae, commonly called inchworms or canker worms, descended from the shade trees lining city streets on threads of silk, in numbers heavy enough that residents reportedly carried open umbrellas on sunny days just to keep the worms out of their hair. Someone pointed out that London didn’t have this problem, and London had house sparrows. The connection, however loosely reasoned, was enough to launch an experiment.

A failed first attempt, then a bigger one

The man behind the plan was Nicholas Pike, director of the Brooklyn Institute, the learned society that would eventually grow into the Brooklyn Museum. Sources differ slightly on the exact year, some say 1850, others 1851, but the sequence of events is consistent: Pike arranged for eight pairs of house sparrows to be shipped over from England, kept them through the winter in a large cage, and released them the following spring. It didn’t work. According to multiple accounts of the period, the birds failed to establish themselves and did not survive to breed.

Rather than abandon the idea, the Institute escalated it. A committee raised $200, and in 1852 Pike traveled to Liverpool himself to arrange a much larger shipment, this time on the order of a hundred birds. After an eleven-day Atlantic crossing, half were released at the Narrows, the tidal strait between Brooklyn and Staten Island, while the other half were taken to Green-Wood Cemetery. That second group initially struggled through the winter in the cemetery’s bell tower, so a Brooklyn Institute trustee named John Hooper reportedly took the birds home with him until spring, when they were released into the cemetery grounds under the care of a hired attendant. This time, the colony took hold.

The wrong bird for the job

What nobody involved in the project had fully reckoned with is that the house sparrow isn’t an insect specialist. It’s a granivore, a seed-and-grain eater that evolved alongside human agriculture and thrives on whatever food a farm town or city street happens to spill. Sparrows do feed insects to their nestlings in the breeding season, which was enough for early observers to declare victory. Newspaper accounts from the period reported that inchworms had all but vanished from city trees within a few years of the sparrows’ arrival, and residents at the time did notice that alongside inchworms, the sparrows also ate yellow caterpillars, grasshoppers, earthworms, and other insects.

But that early success was partial and short-lived. Adult sparrows quickly settled into what sparrows actually do best: eating grain, whether in fields, out of feed wagons, or scavenged from the oats that fell from horses’ feed bags on every American city street of the era, since horse-drawn transportation meant an effectively limitless supply of spilled grain and manure-borne seed. The birds had been hired to handle a specific insect problem. They stayed, instead, as year-round tenants living off an entirely different food source that American cities happened to provide in abundance.

A colonization that outran the pest it was meant to fix

What followed wasn’t a slow spread, it was closer to a chain reaction. Other American cities, hearing about Brooklyn’s apparent success, ran their own sparrow releases, and organizations like the American Acclimatization Society, founded in 1871 with a broader mission of stocking the United States with familiar European wildlife, shipped birds further west by rail. By the 1870s, house sparrows introduced into Central Park and supported by acclimatization efforts had multiplied and spread across urban areas nationwide, and within a few decades of the original Brooklyn release, the birds were established across most of the continental United States and into Canada.

The public mood soured almost as quickly as the population grew. By the late 1870s, New Yorkers were up in arms over the sheer scale of the sparrow population, with some residents calling for their nests to be torn down or the birds shot outright, and the federal government eventually got involved, with the Department of Agriculture publishing extensive assessments of what newspapers of the day had started calling “the sparrow question.” The complaints weren’t limited to crop damage. Sparrows were also blamed for driving native cavity-nesting birds like bluebirds, wrens, and swallows out of their own nest sites, a competitive pressure that ornithologists still track today.

The species that outlived its own mission

Graded purely as a pest-control project, the Brooklyn sparrow release was close to a total failure: the wrong species for the job, aimed at the wrong food source, solving a problem that, by most accounts, other American cities eventually dealt with through different means entirely as new caterpillar species and better tree management took over. As an accidental case study in how a species colonizes new territory, though, it’s close to a perfect demonstration. Take an animal already adapted to thrive alongside human settlements, drop it into a continent full of brand-new cities and horse-powered transportation, remove essentially all of its natural predators and competitors from back home, and repeat the release enough times that early failures don’t matter. What mattered in the end wasn’t strategy. It was volume: the same basic experiment, run first with eight pairs that died, and then with roughly a hundred birds that didn’t.

There’s a genuinely strange coda to the whole story. In Europe, including in London, the city whose sparrow-free trees supposedly inspired the entire Brooklyn scheme, house sparrow populations have been declining for decades, in some cities dramatically. The bird a Brooklyn civic society imported specifically to fix a local problem is now, by most measures, thriving far more in the country that adopted it than in the one that originally recommended it.
