Her tracking device has no battery, no satellite link, and no moving parts it’s a scuffed ring of metal, and it’s still reporting in.

On December 10, 1956, a wildlife biologist named Chandler Robbins was working his way through a seabird colony on Midway Atoll, a speck of coral roughly halfway between North America and Asia, clipping small numbered bands around the legs of nesting albatrosses.
One bird he banded that day was an adult female Laysan albatross sitting on an egg, entirely unremarkable at the time. Dwight Eisenhower was president. The transistor radio counted as cutting edge consumer technology. Robbins recorded her band number and moved on to the next bird.
That same albatross returned to Midway again this past November, for the 2025-2026 nesting season, and found her longtime mate waiting for her.
An age that’s a floor, not a guess
Her name now is Wisdom, officially band number Z333, and she holds the title of oldest known wild bird on Earth. Her exact age isn’t precisely known, but it can be pinned to a reliable minimum.
Laysan albatrosses typically don’t begin breeding until somewhere between five and ten years old, and Wisdom was already incubating an egg when Robbins banded her in 1956, meaning she must have hatched sometime around 1951 or earlier.
That places her at at least 74 years old, described by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as “approximately 75,” with every reason to think the true number could be somewhat higher.
Keeping a single identity attached to one bird across seven decades has taken active maintenance, not just luck. Metal leg bands wear out against coral sand and saltwater, typically failing after roughly twenty years, so Wisdom has been recaptured and re-banded multiple times over her life, with each worn ring replaced and her identity carried forward into the new one.
In one of ornithology’s better full-circle moments, the biologist who recaptured and re-banded her in 2002 was Chandler Robbins himself, by then 82 years old and returning to Midway specifically hoping to find some of the birds he’d tagged decades earlier. It had been 46 years since the two had last crossed paths.
Rewriting the textbook, one return at a time
Bird banding is about as low-tech as field biology gets: a crimped metal ring, a serial number, and the hope that someone, somewhere, eventually reads it again. In Wisdom’s case, that simple method has outperformed almost every high-tech alternative available to modern wildlife science.
Since 1956, biologists have banded more than a quarter million albatrosses on Midway. The next oldest known bird among all of them is 52, meaning Wisdom holds a lead of more than two decades over her nearest rival, a gap that keeps forcing scientists to revise upward what they thought was a realistic maximum lifespan for a seabird.
She’s also complicated assumptions about reproductive aging. Biologists estimate she has laid somewhere between 50 and 60 eggs over her lifetime and fledged as many as 30 chicks.
In November 2024, after her longtime mate Akeakamai stopped returning to the colony (he hadn’t been seen since roughly 2021), Wisdom paired with a new male, banded EX25, and at an estimated age of 74 laid an egg for the first time in four years.
That egg hatched a chick on January 30, 2025, making Wisdom, by most accounts, the oldest wild bird ever documented successfully hatching offspring. It’s worth being straightforward about how that particular chapter ended: the chick was reported alive as of May 2025, but according to Wikipedia’s citation trail, it had died sometime before Wisdom’s next colony return was confirmed in November 2025, a reminder that even a record-setting hatch didn’t guarantee the chick’s survival to fledging.
Despite that loss, Wisdom and EX25 reunited at the colony on November 26, 2025, among roughly a million and a half nesting birds, apparently preparing for another attempt.
Surviving a tsunami mid-incubation
Along the way, that single metal band has quietly logged some genuinely dramatic incidental history. Wisdom has outlived multiple mates and, in March 2011, survived one of the more destructive events in the refuge’s recorded history: the TÅhoku earthquake sent a tsunami crashing across Midway’s low lying islands, and the combined toll from the wave and two preceding winter storms killed more than 110,000 albatross chicks and roughly 2,000 adult birds across the refuge, a loss equal to about 22 percent of that year’s entire chick production.
Wisdom went briefly unaccounted for in the immediate aftermath, since her exact nest site’s fate wasn’t confirmed right away, but she resurfaced days later, alive and tending to her chick, one of the smaller, quieter survival stories inside a genuinely catastrophic event for the colony as a whole.
Over her lifetime, biologists estimate she has also flown several million miles of open Pacific Ocean in total, a distance equivalent to multiple round trips to the Moon, the entire itinerary tracked by nothing more than a stamped piece of aluminum.
The instrument that works because nobody upgraded it
There’s a genuine irony in what Wisdom’s story says about wildlife-tracking technology. Modern field biology increasingly runs on GPS tags, satellite uplinks, and accelerometers, instruments that can cost thousands of dollars apiece and typically fail within a few years as batteries die or the animal molts the attachment off.
Wisdom’s tracking device has none of that. No battery, no signal, no moving parts. It functions purely because the animal wearing it cooperates: Laysan albatrosses show intense fidelity to their birth colony and, often, their exact nest site, which means the data essentially collects itself, one November arrival at a time, for as long as someone keeps showing up to check.
That’s really the underlying instrument, more than the band itself: a marked animal paired with an institution patient enough to keep reading the mark, decade after decade.
The banding and monitoring program at Midway has run continuously since the 1950s. Robbins himself died in 2017, and the work simply continued without him, the way the most durable long-term scientific efforts tend to outlast any single person who started them.
What a scuffed ring on a pink leg keeps reporting
Wisdom’s fame, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service greeted her most recent return with the social-media line “The queen returns!”, can obscure just how strange her actual annual routine is.
Each year she crosses thousands of miles of open, featureless ocean to land on an atoll of roughly six square kilometers, walks to the same patch of sand, and waits to find one specific mate among more than a million other Laysan albatrosses nesting at the site.
Most years, he shows up. An egg follows, then months of incubation shifts traded back and forth with her partner and long foraging trips out over open water, and eventually the cycle starts again.
She was already doing this before the interstate highway system existed in the United States. She’s still doing it now, in a colony that includes some of her own descendants.
The longest continuously running individual tracking record in ornithology turns out to be a scuffed metal ring on one albatross’s leg, and the thing it keeps reporting, year after year, is about as simple as data gets: still here, still returning, still trying to raise the next one.
